SECTOR 4

4.3 The media cover the full spectrum of events, issues
and cultures, including business/economics, cultural,
local and investigative stories.
Generally speaking the panel deems that print media and the broadcasting sector
offer something for everybody. Specialised Ivorian newspapers (business, news,
sports) keep proliferating.
Even though the coverage of religious services still dominates in the broadcasting
sector, one can point out that investigative topics are indeed represented across
the spectrum of Ivorian media. This kind of article is in fact rewarded with the
Ebony prize. Launched in early 2012 L’éléphant Déchainé is a recent, accomplished
example of an Ivorian investigative newspaper. It was launched in January 2012
and one waits to see if it will continue as, sadly, only few of the new titles survive
the market. They often discontinue their publication after just a few months due
to financial pressures in some cases the standard also quickly drops, as in the case
of Nord/Sud.

4.4. Equal opportunities regardless of race or ethnicity,
social group, gender/sex, religion, disabilities and age
are promoted in media houses.
Ivorian media bodies promote equal opportunities; all ethnic, religious and racial
groups, people living with disabilities are represented. Women in positions of
responsibility are few in numbers but this is not the reflection of sexist attitudes.
Once they have a qualification, they often prefer taking up positions, for example
in the field of communication, that are financially better rewarded than those in
the media sector.
