Strictly speaking, there are no community broadcasting outlets in Algeria. Communities are not awarded radio bandwidth not to mention television bandwidth. Nonetheless, the government has made significant progress in the field of local broadcasting. Despite the monopoly, some stations are very well liked for the content they offer targeting certain components of the society or geographic zones. Following the spring 2001 events in Kabylia and the recognition of the Tamazight language by the Constitution, the Berber community is served by a dedicated television channel. However, well before this date, the radio station was already airing programmes in Tamazight.
