2.3 The editorial independence of print media
published by a public authority is protected
adequately against undue political interference
According to the panelists, La Nation, the state newspaper, seems to be losing
its editorial neutrality. From 2014 to 2018, two trends have been observed at La
Nation. Under the old regime (between 2014 and 2016) the newspaper strove
to display a certain editorial neutrality. However, after the advent of the current
regime coming into power [late 2018], the newspaper increasingly runs progovernmental and propaganda headlines. This has increased following recent
changes in its management and editorial teams.
The newspaper is beginning to lose public trust. The public perceives its
editorial policy as one that is designed to promote government action, to praise
the president of the republic and to discredit opinions that are critical of the
government.
