WAY FORWARD The way forward 1. What were the developments in the media environment in the last two/three years? - On the whole, stagnation is noted; 2. What kinds of activities are needed over the next years? - - - Conduct intensive advocacy campaigns and lobbying in preparation for the adoption by the National Assembly and the promulgation of the draft Press Code; Strengthen the specialisation of journalists and network them on development issues such as coastal erosion, climate change. Submit a request to that effect to the Economic, Social and Environmental Council; Open a very wide public debate (conferences, fora, direct dialogues, etc.) on the profession and practices of journalists, as well as the role, responsibilities and the place of the media in Senegalese society; Open up for debate the recriminations levelled at the media and journalists, such as the issue of the right of reply; Strengthen the Committee on Observance of the Rules of Professional Ethics and Conduct (CORED); Encourage and support research on the media, in agreement with the higher institutes for journalism and communication training; Strengthen the capacity of professional media organisations with regard to legal matters; Raise citizen awareness about the media and strengthen the links between citizen organisations and the professional media organisations; Mobilise the members of the panel at the official launching of the barometer report. Ensure that the launching is linked to an event and discuss the date – preferably not a working day – with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation; Conduct advocacy in favour of improving commercial radio stations’ conditions of access to information with a view to providing better information to the populations of the region.
