SECTOR 3 Certain panellists also recall possible conflicts of interests between the chairperson of the board, Mr Babacar Touré, and the press group of which he was the manager at the time of his appointment (Sud Communication, publisher of the newspaper Sud Quotidien and operator of the radio station Sud FM), from which he is not known to have officially resigned. In fairness to him, a panellist affirms that he indicated publicly, at a meeting widely covered by the press, that he no longer had any interests in the group. Furthermore, he affirms that certain members of the board did not know the chairperson Babacar Touré before he consulted them about proposing them for nomination to the CNRA. But, replies a member of the group, the procedure is not normal and, ultimately, it is not about the team, but rather a matter of representation. Furthermore the representative of the professionals within the board, Mr Jean Meissa Diop, remains – until proved otherwise – the publishing director and owner of the daily Grand Place, in flagrant violation of the law on the CNRA. A member of the group reports that the Senegalese Union of Information and Communications Professionals (SYNPICS) does not recognise the CNRA in its present composition. Without casting doubt on the intrinsic quality of any member of the board, in particular that of the representative of the professionals, the union of journalists and technicians feels that he does not represent it. As a result, SYNPICS refuses to comment on the notices/opinions of the board, by which, besides, it is not bound. In this regard, the union is merely maintaining the same attitude it had adopted towards the former team of the CNRA. Within that team, too, the representative of the professionals and journalists had not been chosen in agreement with SYNPICS. According to this panellist, “the new President of the Republic, Macky Sall, has changed only the members, not the methods that SYNPICS had decried”.
