SECTOR 4

Rural communities are neglected by all media as are minority groups. When
resources were still available, the ZBC managed to cover rural communities
extensively.
Journalists are producing

interviews only. “It also
nuances and identify a number of angels”
boils down to their
definition of a journalist
and what a journalist is
expected to do. When journalists do not see themselves as part of the communities
they are in they are removed from the realities. A journalist should get on a bus,
travel out to the rural areas, spend a few days there, eating and drinking with the
people. This is the only way to pick up nuances and identify a number of angles.”

Analysis

After a study released by Gender Links (Glass Ceiling Report) which showed
Zimbabwe’s poor performance in promoting women to decision making posts
there was a deliberate attempt to redress the imbalance. There are now more
women on the boards of directors in media houses. Radio Dialogue now has a
gender policy, though not yet implemented.
