SECTOR 2

2.10 Private broadcasters deliver a minimum of quality
public interest programmes.
Congolese wake up to locally produced shows like Congo Matin on DRTV.
Along with programmes like Café de la Presse and Sans Detour, Dites-le (TéléCongo), Face aux Auditeurs (Radio-Congo), La grande Interview (MNCOM TV),
Le Magazine de la presse sur MNOM TV, Congo Matin portrays the desire of
broadcasters to produce proximity content. The shows are highly popular and
admired by the general public because they deal with daily issues that affect them
directly. But beyond a few programmes like those sited here, there seems to be
nothing else.
“Quality local programmes are lacking. Most private radios and TV channels play
music all day because they have nothing else to air.” Newscasts are also often
dominated by international news (up to 70%), which relay on foreign channels.
Lack of resources and qualified personnel have been blamed for the scarcity of
quality local productions. For example, there are no programmes on the history
of the country since independence to the present day (2013). “Sustainability is a
problem. Most stations have a line-up of quality programmes when they started
broadcasting but before long those programmes begin to disappear.” Employees
are also not motivated because of low salaries and poor working conditions.
